Manuel serves as COO of Popular Community Bank, responsible for the day-to-day U.S. operations of the bank. He is based in Rosemont, Illinois. Popular Community Bank is the assumed business name of Banco Popular North America, Popular Inc’s $9 billion banking subsidiary in the U.S. mainland with operations in NY, NJ, FL, IL and CA. He has direct management experience in functional disciplines that include marketing, product management, sales, retail banking and business banking during his 25 years at Popular Community Bank and Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. His experience includes leading cross-functional teams, developing brand identity, driving sales culture, managing distribution channels and aligning products and services to meet and exceed customer expectations.
Prior to his current position, Manuel served as Chief Marketing Officer of Popular Community Bank from 1999 to 2012, where he had responsibility for overseeing all marketing and product development efforts for the Bank in the U.S., including overall brand. In 2008 his role was expanded to Head of Retail Banking Operations. Working closely with regional market executives, Manuel led the bank’s branch rationalization and optimization efforts. His responsibilities included management of the Bank’s alternative delivery channels (ATMs, Internet and Call Center) as well as three specialized sales and support units: Cash Management, Investment & Insurance Sales and Consumer Lending. Later that year he was appointed President of Popular Insurance USA, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Banco Popular North America. Beginning in 2010 he led the name change and rebranding efforts of the U.S. operation from Banco Popular to Popular Community Bank.
He began his career with Popular at Banco Popular de Puerto Rico where he held several different roles over the course of 11 years. Most of his experience was in the functional disciplines of product management, cash management and small business lending, including oversight of the Bank’s Government-Guaranteed Loan Programs.
From April 2012 to January 2013, Manuel served as EVP and Chief Marketing & Product Executive at CertusBank, a Southeast regional bank, headquartered in Greenville, SC.
For over two decades, Manuel has been an active member and officer of several marketing, credit, treasury management and not-for-profit organizations. Manuel received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, and his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
