Ignacio Alvarez, President and Chief Executive Officer of Popular, Inc.

Alvarez has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Popular, Inc. since July 1st, 2017. Prior to this appointment he served as President and Chief Operating Officer.

Previously, served as Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. Before this, he was one of the six founding partners of the law firm Pietrantoni Mendez & Alvarez LLP.

Recognized by Chambers Global as “one of the best lawyers in Puerto Rico,” Alvarez was an integral part of the firm’s success for 18 years. Among his main practice areas are: banking, corporate and commercial law; corporate and public finance law; securities and capital markets.

Alvarez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1958; graduated from Georgetown University, Magna Cum Laude, 1980; Harvard Law School J.D., Cum Laude, 1983; and admitted to the Bar in Florida and Puerto Rico in 1983.

He was an Adjunct Professor and Lecturer, University of Puerto Rico Law School, from 1988 to 1992. He has been a member of the Board of Regents of Georgetown University since October 2008.

Betina Castellvi Armas, Chief Security Officer

Betina Castellví is Chief Security Officer and Executive Vice President leading the Cybersecurity and Fraud efforts of Popular Inc., where she has worked for more than 20 years. She has been General Auditor of the Corporation and held leading roles in the Financial and Operational Risk Management area and in the brokerage business serving as CFO and COO of Popular Securities LLC. Before joining Popular in 1996, Castellví was an Audit and Business Advisory Manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Castellví is one of the founding members of the Puerto Rico Ellevate chapter, part of the Executive Council and has served as its treasurer since 2013. She has also held different positions in nonprofit and professional organizations in Puerto Rico and United States, such as Hogar de Niñas de Cupey, Fundación para Río Piedras (FpRP), and was the Firm’s representative at the MSRB Uniform Practice Contact Group, among others.

Castellví holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics with a concentration in accounting from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico. She is a Certified Public Accountant, holds Series 7 and Series 27 certifications and is admitted to the Bar in Puerto Rico.

Castellví is married and has two children.


Luis E. Cestero, Executive Vice President of Retail Banking of Banco Popular

Luis Cestero Casanova received a Master’s degree in finance from Indiana University, and a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Fairfield University.

Mr. Cestero began his career at Banco Popular de Puerto Rico in 1995, as part of the Management Trainee Program. In 1996 he joined the Strategic Planning Division as a Financial Analyst and later in 2000, after obtaining his MBA, he started working in the Retail Banking Operations Division as a Project Coordinator. He was appointed Division Manager of the Retail Banking Operations Division in 2004.

In April 2009 he was named the Senior Vice-President of Retail Banking Administration Division, in charge of the 174 branches in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands; the Business Banking Division, the Retail Banking Operations Division and the Customer Contact Center.

In July 2017, he was appointed Executive Vice-President of the Retail Banking Group.

Mr. Cestero is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Non-Profit Organization, Programa de Educación Comunal de Entrega y Servicios (PECES), since January 2017.

Mr. Cestero is married and has two children.


Manuel Chinea, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Popular Bank

Manuel is an Executive Vice President of Popular Inc, a leading financial institution with $40 billion in assets and operations in Puerto Rico, the United States mainland and Virgin Islands. He is based in New York and serves as Chief Operating Officer of Popular Bank, Popular Inc’s $9 billion banking subsidiary in the U.S. mainland with operations in New York, New Jersey and South Florida. In that capacity, he oversees all operations and business activities for the New York-based Popular Bank.

Manuel has worked at Popular for 28 years and has held leading roles in the areas of marketing, sales, product management, consumer lending, insurance, investments, retail operations and business banking. Prior to his current role as Chief Operating Officer, Manuel served as Chief Marketing Officer and Head of Retail Banking Operations. He has distinguished himself for leading transformational changes, such as the rebranding of the U.S. operations from Banco Popular North America to Popular Community Bank and later to Popular; the sale of Popular’s operations in California, Illinois and Orlando; the acquisition and integration of Doral Bank; and most recently, the ramp up of commercial lending activity as well as the ongoing efforts to transform the bank’s retail banking network.

For over two decades, Manuel has been an active member and officer of several marketing, credit, treasury management and nonprofit organizations, and he currently serves as Board Member of the Hispanic Federation. Manuel received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, and his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.


Javier D. Ferrer-Fernández, Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel, Corporate Secretary and Chief Strategic Officer

Ferrer-Fernández is one of the six founding partners of the law firm Pietrantoni Méndez & Álvarez LLP. His law practice focused on representing local, U.S. and international clients in corporate, corporate governance and securities matters, including public and private offerings of equity and debt securities, with extensive experience in acquisitions and capital market transactions.

A significant portion of his recent practice included representing governmental entities engaged in public-private partnerships, banks and other financial institutions based in Puerto Rico, including investment companies, investment advisors, insurance companies and broker-dealers as well as providing advice with respect to registration, reporting and disclosure requirements under U.S. federal and Puerto Rico securities laws and regulations.

Ferrer-Fernández was President and Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Government Development Bank and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Economic Development Bank for Puerto Rico.

Born in Havana, Cuba in 1961, Ferrer-Fernández graduated from Harvard University in 1983; Boston College Law School in 1986; and is admitted to the Bar in Puerto Rico, Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit.

He acted as Adjunct Professor and Lecturer in Securities Regulation at the University of Puerto Rico Law from 1992-1996.

Juan O. Guerrero, Executive Vice President of Financial and Insurance Services of Popular, Inc.

Juan O. Guerrero has been Executive Vice President of Banco Popular in charge of the Financial and Insurance Services Group since 2004. He has been Director of Popular Securities, Inc. since 1995 and of Popular Insurance, Inc. since 2004.

Guerrero has also been Director of the Popular Family of Funds since 2001 and PRITFF Family of Funds from 1999 to 2010. He was Senior Vice President of Banco Popular from 1990 to 2004.

Since December 2010, Guerrero has been director of Easter Seals Puerto Rico, known as SER for its Spanish acronym (Sociedad de Educación y Rehabilitación), a nonprofit organization that provides services to children and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities since 1950.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Fairfield University and an MBA from Indiana University.


Gilberto F. Monzón, Executive Vice President of Individual Credit of Banco Popular

Mr. Gilberto Monzón is currently the Executive Vice President in charge of the Consumer Lending Group for Banco Popular de Puerto Rico. Prior to joining the bank, Monzón was Senior Vice President for Metmor Financial, and Executive Vice President at Puerto Rico Home Mortgage.

He has collaborated with the Puerto Rican Government and federal agencies in the development of credit policies and incentives for subsidized and affordable housing programs in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

He is currently Vice President of the Mortgage Bankers Association of Puerto Rico and served as its President from 2004 to 2006. He is the President of the Mortgage Committee of the American Bankers Association’s Puerto Rico Chapter, as well as a member of the Government Relations Council for the American Bankers Association in Washington DC. Monzón is also member of Fannie Mae’s Advisory Board as well as the Affordable Housing Council. From 2004 to 2010, Mr. Monzón served as a member of the Residential Board of Governors of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America.

Monzón studied Economics at Sacred Heart University and attended the School of Mortgage Banking of the Mortgage Bankers Association of America. He has completed other studies in the areas of appraisal, financial planning, real estate and consumer credit.


Eduardo J. Negrón, Executive Vice President of Administration Group of Popular, Inc.

Eduardo J. Negrón-Méndez is Executive Vice President and Manager of the Administration Group at Popular, Inc. He supervises Human Resources, Marketing and Corporate Communications, as well as the Banco Popular Foundations in Puerto Rico and the United States.

Negrón is a Certified Public Accountant and an attorney with substantive experience in government, accounting and legal matters, having worked both at private practice and government agencies. Before joining Popular in 2000, he served as Deputy Secretary of Puerto Rico Department of Treasury. He also practiced law at O’Neill and Borges and public accounting at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. When he joined Popular, he served as Director of the Legal Division and Assistant Secretary of the Board of Directors before being named Manager of the Administration Group in 2008.

Negrón is Trustee and Treasurer at the Fundación Banco Popular de Puerto Rico and the Banco Popular Foundation in the United States, Trustee of Fundación Angel Ramos, and Director at the Fundación Luis Muñoz Marín. He has also held different positions in several nonprofit and professional organizations in Puerto Rico and United States, such as the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants; the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce; the American Bankers Association; the Financial Services Roundtable; and the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute, among others.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from the University of South Florida and a Juris Doctor from the University of Puerto Rico.

Lidio V. Soriano, Executive Vice President of Risk Management of Popular, Inc.

Mr. Lidio V. Soriano is the Executive Vice President of the Risk Management Group of Popular, Inc. since August 2011. Soriano served as the Chief Financial Officer of Westernbank Puerto Rico from October 2008 to April 2010. He also served as an Executive Vice President and Head of Retail Banking & Mortgage Divisions of Oriental Financial Group Inc., from October 2007 to October 2008.

Soriano held various senior positions at Doral Financial, Inc, from January 2005 to March 2006, including Chief Financial Officer and Risk Management Director. Previously, he served as the President of Doral Money, a New York based subsidiary of Doral Bank. Before joining Doral Financial, he served as Vice President in charge of the Mortgage Division of Citibank Puerto Rico.

He holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Cornell University and an MBA from Tulane University.


Carlos J. Vázquez, Chief Financial Officer of Popular, Inc.

Carlos Vázquez was appointed Chief Financial Officer in March 2013. Vázquez joined Popular, Inc. as Executive Vice President in 1997 to establish and lead the Risk Management Group, which included the Credit Risk Management, Audit, Corporate Compliance, Operational Risk Management and Risk Management MIS Divisions. He also headed Popular’s Consumer Lending Group for Puerto Rico.

Vázquez holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an economics minor from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, graduating on the Dean's List and as a member and officer of Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Society. He also holds a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard University's Graduate School of Business.

In June 2012, he was appointed to Operation HOPE’s National Board of Directors. Operation Hope is a leading nonprofit social investment banking and financial literacy empowerment organization with a mission to eradicate poverty in the U.S.
